Announcing Our First Granddogs!
Mother: Patch
Father: ????? (could be a Rottweiler, because the black puppies have brown eyebrows
and hinies, just like a Rottweiler)
Uncles: Georgie & Smoky
Auntie: Polly
The litter is 4 babies, each about 13-3/4 oz, 6-1/2" long:
1 Brown female with white markings - possible names: Hazel, Meg (Nutmeg) or Penny
1 Brown male with white markings - possible names: Bruno, Robin, Chutney
2 Black males with brown markings - possible names: Berry (Blackberry), Jinx
Patch is a wonderful mother - she got them delivered, cleaned up, umbilical cords severed, and nursing without any help (unless you count a lot of worrying on the part of the grandparents). On the advice of an OH friend, Toni, we put Patch outside to pee today. She did her business and ran right back to the door, anxious to be reunited with her family. While she was gone, the babies squeaked in dismay even though their Grammy was cuddling them.
Georgie and Polly haven't actually met their niece and nephews yet. Maybe in a few days, when we're all a bit more relaxed about our new family situation. Meanwhile, Patch and the babies have moved from the laundry room into our storage room (my husband covered the shelving out there with chicken wire, so we hope nobody can get into too much mischief - at least for a while). G&P keep sniffing at the door - they know something's up - and were fascinated by the soiled bedding.
The babies all take after their grandmother, because they LOVE TO EAT. They wiggle so much, it's hard to photograph them (and they and Patch panic when separated), but here's a shot that shows the line-up:
Patch was a stray (we live in the country, and a**holes drop off unwanted animals here all the time), and we need another pet like we need a hole in the head, but we are SO happy! Patch and her babies are so sweet, we are truly blessed.
Just had to share!

awwww they are so cute and cuddly!! just wait a few weeks and watch out!! they will be into everything!!!! also looks like patches needs a larger area for her and the pups...don't want her laying on them and smothering them to death...even the most careful mothers can lay on their babies....just a hint...
congrats!!
hugs
You're right about them needing a bigger bed. I check on them frequently to make sure Patch isn't smothering a baby. From what I read, a child's wading pool is the perfect whelping bed, but just try to find one of those in December. Not even at the Goodwill Store. Any suggestions?
thanks,
Jean

I have a friend who raises dashshunds and she uses the child's wading pool under her kitchen table for her pups...but sure know it wouldn't be easy to find one this time of year. (I could find one!! But that doesn't help you much....Ha) Try eBay! Maybe you could wall off a corner of the room using cement blocks or something. Put on your thinking cap....I know you'll come up with a light bulb moment!!
Have fun with your news babes!! Such fun to image you with them....lucky everyone!
